Engine Idling Campaign

Engine Idling Campaign

Stonehouse Community Climate Action Forum led by Stonehouse Town Council wanted to drive a campaign to promote the negative impacts of ‘engine idling’. They wanted to focus on the fact that ‘1 idling engine produces enough pollution every 60 seconds to fill 160 balloons’. The campaign included banners strategically positioned in the town (outside schools and areas of higher traffic) and flyers given out to parents of school children and members of the public at ongoing related events. Cutting air pollution outside schools by 20% could improve children’s learning by a month a year. A cut could improve the development of a child’s working memory by 6% – the equivalent of four weeks extra learning time per year. Across a young person’s entire time at school it could result in an improvement of more than a year.
